Elaine was raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma and graduated from Braggs High School in Braggs, Oklahoma in 1971. Elaine was heavily involved in Muskogee Little Theater and in the drama department at Northeastern State University where she enjoyed being a part of The Follies, assisting in stage setup and working lights and music for productions. She loved the theater and always spoke fondly of being involved with it and the friendships grown out of it.
In 1979 Elaine met the love of her life and future husband, Harley Joe Huggins. She always said that it was love at first sight with Harley and they married in 1985 in Muskogee. Harley & Elaine vacationed in Colorado every year. They loved hiking and exploring the beauty of the mountains together. They enjoyed 31 years of wedded bliss together before her death.
Elaine graduated from Connors State College in 1995 with her Associates degree and continued on to Northeastern State University where she received her Bachelors in Secondary Education and later her Masters Degree. After graduation, Elaine taught high school English in Dustin, Muskogee, and Wagoner High Schools as well as Northeastern State University before retiring. Teaching was always dear to Elaine’s heart and she loved getting to teach students a love of literature.
In her spare time Elaine loved playing music on both the mandolin and guitar. One of her favorite activities was attending Blue Grass Festivals where she would sit in and play with fellow musicians. Playing music and singing was a big part of Elaine’s life and she loved every free moment that she was able to enjoy it. Elaine was also a hospice volunteer for a number of years. She visited patients in nursing homes with her therapy dog, Sugar, and also painted their nails and sang hymns to cheer the patient’s up. She loved everyone she met.
